Lt Gen GS Chopra, SM, VSM did his MBBS from Patiala Medical College in 1975 and was commissioned in Army Medical Corps in 1977. He has obtained MD (Microbiology) in 1988 from AFMC, Pune and was awarded PhD (Molecular Biology) by prestigious AIIMS, New Delhi in 1998. In addition, The Gen Officer has  undergone an Advanced Course in Immunology from Brisbane, Australia. He is also MNAMS from National Board of Medical Sciences. The Gen Officer is a life member and  fellow of many International professional associations including International Union of Cancer Cure, Geneva. He has also been trained at King’s Hospital, London.

The Gen Officer has keen interest in advance diagnosis in microbiology, haematology, pathology and biochemistry and is an expert in DNA finger printing for clinical purposes. He has established state of the art Molecular Biology Lab of International standards at Army Hospital (R&R), Delhi Cantt and headed the Lab Sciences and Pathology Department there for many years. The Gen Officer has published more than 70 research papers in the national & the international journals and read papers in 40 reputed Conferences. He has 23 years of experience in teaching and is recognized undergraduate and postgraduate teacher of MUHS, Maharashtra, Delhi and King George University. The Gen Officer is also a recognized PhD examiner of AIIMS, New Delhi. The Gen Officer has received numerous academic and administrative awards and honoured by the President of India for his distinguished service with awards viz Sena Medal (SM) and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) in 2005 and 2008 respectively. The Gen Officer has also received Chief of Army Staff's Commendation thrice and Amir Chand Award for best research work. In addition, the Gen Officer has been applauded many times for his best research work/papers by Chief of the Army & Navy.

In his distinguished career, the Gen Officer has held number of Staff, Command and Instructional appointments, which include appointments of Brig Adm, AFMC, Commandant 155 Base Hosp, Brig Med, HQ 4 Corps, MG(Med) HQ MB Area, MG (Med), Central Command and also served in HQ IMTRAT.

The Gen Officer has retired as Director General (Organization and Personnel), Armed Forces Medical Services, and presently serving as the Professor of Microbiology at Christian Medical College, Ludhiana.
